It’s a real pleasure to work with Keswick Museum on their fundraising strategy and plans. Keswick Museum is Cumbria’s oldest museum: a true treasure-trove with important collections relating to Cumbria’s physical, social and cultural history. Taking in geological samples collected by Ernest Shackleton, collections of manuscripts and letters by Southey and other Lakes poets, archeological remains, paintings of the region, natural history and – of course – the stone xylophone (played for Queen Victoria), it immerses visitors in the heritage of the Lakes.
Largely volunteer-run, its many awards and glowing reviews prove the joy it brings to many, visitor and local alike. It’s a true hub for the community, with its large network of volunteers, a free community gallery, and a cafe which provides work and training opportunities for people with learning difficulties. In 2014 it underwent a major renovation making it accessible, creating additional space, and new displays. Thematic displays look at different aspects of the history of the Lakes, whilst changing exhibitions take a ‘deep dive’ into important moments and people.
As at Keswick Museum, fundraising for most museums is vital to resilience and growth – more so now than ever. In these critical times it is great to work alongside the team on their fundraising plans, helping the museum lay the foundations for good fundraising. Tarnside has extensive experience in the heritage and arts sector and it is a joy to put experience to work with the museum’s professional and dynamic team.
